TA total of about 2000 vegetable germplasm resources were evaluated in the Beijing Vegetable Germplasm Improvement Lab., in 1996-2000. For germplasm improvement and utilization purpose 263 valuable materials were found, including heat tolerant materials of Chinese cabbage and several related gene markers; high lycopene materials of carrots and the full-length cDNA for LYC-b was isolated. Some high Vitamins, minerals and health nature compounds contenting materials were found with contents more than ten times higher than regular cultivars. Also 18 new kinds of vegetables have possible strong anti-tumor promoting properties were evaluated.
