Variation of glutenin and gliadin polypeptides was studied in 160 wheat landraces from northwest of Iran. In order to obtain seeds under similar environmental conditions, an augmented design was performed in Tabriz. Using SDS_PAGE, a high correspondence between some glutenin subunits and geographical distribution of wheat landraces was observed. The frequencies of 4+12 at Glu-D1, 7 + 8 at Glu-B1 and 2* at Glu-A1 were found to be as high as 54%, 63% and 55% respectively. Positively correlated subunits with the breadmaking quality (5 + 10, Glu-D1) were below 5%. The frequencies of ω-gliadin  subunits of 45, 43.5, ... which improve the dough viscoelasticity, appeared to vary from 10 to 48%, (in Acid-PAGE). Some of the wheat landraces under study could, therefore, be used as a promising germplasm in breeding wheat for Iranian type of flat breads.
